Briana Pippens

Artist Statement

My work explores the quiet ways identity is built, carried, and remembered. Through painting, fiber art, illustration, and public murals, I create portraits and visual narratives that center Black life with tenderness, curiosity, and care. I am interested in the moments that often go unnoticed: the rituals of getting ready, inherited gestures, familiar objects, shared memories, and the internal conversations that shape how we understand ourselves.

Repetition is central to my practice. Whether I am layering paint, building thousands of punch needle loops, or repeating marks across a mural, the act of making becomes a meditation. These repetitive processes mirror the ways identity is formed over time through routine, memory, community, and lived experience.

My recent fiber work expands this exploration through materiality. Yarn introduces warmth, softness, and dimension, transforming everyday imagery into tactile experiences. I am drawn to the tension between traditional craft techniques and contemporary portraiture, using fiber to elevate subjects and stories that have historically been underrepresented in fine art spaces.

Many of my works begin with a simple question rather than a fixed answer. I think about belonging, memory, joy, vulnerability, and the ways people carry both visible and invisible histories. Community also shapes my practice through murals and workshops that celebrate shared histories and lived experience.

Ultimately, I hope my work encourages viewers to slow down, reflect, and find themselves in the spaces between texture, color, memory, and story. By honoring everyday experiences with intention and care, I seek to create work that feels both deeply personal and broadly resonant.
